Oundle Cinema - Hidden Figures (PG)

Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle PE8 4EJ

7:45PM

Based on a best-selling and groundbreaking book by Margot Shetterley, this movie tells the hitherto forgotten story of three black women in America and their stunning contributions to the sixties Space Race, at a time when the USA was falling behind the Soviets. Shocking in its portrayal of everyday segregation - you won't forget the coffee pot or that long walk in those shoes - this movie tells its story in an accessible and uplifting way. Kevin Costner and a scary Kirsten Dunst do a good job in support while the three leads steal the show.

Oundle Cinema - Sully (12A)

Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle PE8 4EJ

7:45PM

The story of the amazing forced landing of US Airways flight 1549 onto the Hudson River following a bird strike immediately after takeoff. The 'landing' was well reported, so the film focuses more on the subsequent publicity and investigation. The battle between Captain Chesley Sullenberger and the Safety Board to prove accident or pilot error yields a typically strong performance from Tom Hanks under Clint Eastwood's directorship. The film uncovers the fear and self-doubt inside a man who would never accept being defined as a hero.

Oundle School - The Importance of Being Ernest

Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle PE8 4EJ

7:45PM

In this, perhaps Wilde's best-loved, farcical comedy we are transported back to prim and proper world of Victorian England. Here we glimpse the lives of an elite group of socialites and delight as the dexterous plot unravels and a complicated web of mistaken identity and romance is revealed. The play's sharp wit and fast pace is nothing short of genius and its satirical view of late Victorian social mores is sure to have an audience in stitches. Performed by the boys Laundimer House in the house's Centennial year this promises a very special event.

Oundle Cinema - Estate, A Reverie (U)

Fletton House, Fletton Way, Oundle PE8 4JA

7:45PM

A deeply moving portrait of a community in East London living on the Haggerston Estate - built on land that was originally part of the estate of the astronomer Edmond Halley, later demolished and recreated in the 1930s as a model housing estate for London's working class. The estate's constituent blocks are named after characters from Samuel Richardson's Clarissa. The film mixes lyricism, literary recreation, gritty realism and music. It is poignant and real, deeply felt and important… a paean to survival, dignity, solidarity, a paean to a community in the face of erosion.

Oundle Cinema - The Other Side of Hope (12A)

Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle PE8 4EJ

7:45PM

If you want escapism far away from La La Land, Kaurismaki, the Finnish master of melancholy wit is your man. His world is a place where jobs are a barely tolerated necessity, everybody smokes and drinks, 1950s/60s vintage clothes, cars, bars and uniforms are preferred; things go off at half-cock and are met with deadpan responses and biting remarks. It's an enjoyable place to escape to, even though you have to be tough to inhabit it. Night-time mood lighting out of Edward Hopper paintings predominates and, just as in old westerns, there are men and women of honour and generosity, and some who have none.
